Metro Manila (Cable News Network Philippines, October 19)-President Rodrigo Duterte is now wearing a portable air purifier around his neck in public appearances due to continuing concerns about his health.

On Friday, Duterte was seen wearing the device while welcoming Indian President Ram Nath Kovind at Malacañang Palace. This prompted the court to issue a clarification.

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo (Salvador Panelo) said in a statement: "It is an air purifier, and [therefore] he will be protected from those nearby who have coughs and colds."

According to AirTamer's website, its personal air purifier is similar to the air purifier used by Duterte, which can remove air pollutants in the user's personal space, including viruses, bacteria and dust. It can be purchased online at a price of approximately P7,000. It was discovered this week that the president wears it on many occasions.

After Duterte revealed that he suffered from a rare neuromuscular disease called myasthenia gravis, concerns about his health intensified this month. It is characterized by weakness of the muscles that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expressions, chewing, speaking, and swallowing. On Thursday, the 74-year-old president fell from a motorcycle and was injured. Officials said the president refused to go to the hospital, saying he was fine.

A survey in January 2019 showed that more and more Filipino adults are worried about Duterte's health, and more of them also believe that the president has health problems. After Duterte admitted to suffering from multiple diseases, critics have been calling for greater transparency in the president’s health — perhaps through the disclosure of medical records or regular medical bulletins.

In his previous speech, the president said that he also suffers from migraines, nausea, pain caused by spinal cord injury, and Burger's disease or diseases that affect blood vessels. He also received a biopsy in 2018 and announced that his cancer test was negative.

Malacañang stated that no medical notice is required because the constitution only requires “in case of serious illness”.
