Metro Manila (Cable News Network Philippines, October 30)-The Department of Health (DOH) stated that due to lack of evidence to prove its efficacy, it neither supports nor recommends the use of necklace-type air purifiers, especially in place of masks.

The agency said in a statement on Friday: “The Ministry of Health clarified that it does not support the use of necklace-style air purifiers that claim to kill bacteria or viruses or prevent COVID-19.” “Although these devices will not cause any harm. However, due to lack of evidence of effectiveness, the Ministry of Health does not currently recommend the use of these devices."

It is said that the portable air purifier can remove air pollutants in the user's personal space, including viruses, bacteria and dust.

Nonetheless, President Rodrigo Duterte has been using it since last year, allegedly to prevent people from coughing and colds.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that the best weapon to prevent the spread of the coronavirus is still to comply with minimum health standards, such as washing hands frequently, wearing masks and keeping body distance
