If you use public transportation, you will know how bad the air is. Commuters constantly cough and sneeze, which releases thousands of bacteria into the air. Thanks to the circulating air, flying on an airplane may be worse. Not to mention the heavily polluted cities like Wuhan, or even Los Angeles, China. Wearing a mask can help prevent you from inhaling these bacteria and pollutants, but they are not very effective and not entirely acceptable in society. The air purifier hung around the neck is more subtle, but the effect is worse. Dyson's new purifier patent describes a product that combines an air purification system with a set of earphones to provide an effective but somewhat subtle solution to maintain health in an environment full of bacteria or pollution.

Dyson’s portable air purifier has two speaker components-they both have a filter, an impeller that generates airflow, and a motor that drives the impeller. The clean air travels down the nozzle to the front belt. The strip has an outlet to release air to your nose and mouth.

With a 12,000 RPM impeller and a motor on each side of the head, these devices seem to have active noise reduction (ANC). It is unclear whether the noise of the motor and impeller will distract commuters and colleagues nearby. These same elements of the product bring about battery life issues-earphones may not last as long as standard wireless earphones. When it comes to the appearance of a wearable air purifier, the front strip that guides air to the nose and mouth may be more attractive than standard antiviral masks.

This is only a patent, so there is no guarantee for a commercially available product. However, Dyson has been developing wearable air purifiers for more than a year, so it seems that this will eventually become a reality. In addition, it does indicate the need for wearable air purification. This may not be something you wear every day, but on a flight or in a contaminated area, it can help avoid illness or damage to the lungs-and it may be something that is readily available in an event hyped in the media (such as current) Coronavirus outbreak.
